Today, we’re delving into a topic close to my heart: anxiety. We often find ourselves caught up in the whirlwind of life, juggling numerous responsibilities, and sometimes, that results in those pesky feelings of anxiety. As an anxiety sufferer, I know all too well the impact these feelings can have on day-to-day life, and I am always looking for solutions. One solution that has been gaining traction among those who seek a calm and centred mind: does meditation help with anxiety?
What is Anxiety & Why Might You Have It?
Before we jump into the meditation aspect of this post, it might be helpful to explore what anxiety actually is. Think of it as an uninvited guest who shows up at the most inconvenient times. Entirely unwelcome and a burden at best. Anxiety is our body’s natural response to stress, a survival mechanism that is over the top. Factors like work pressure, personal relationships, and even the uncertainty of life can contribute to anxiety. Anxiety is quite a common complaint, especially today, where life is particularly fast-paced and stressful.
Anxiety is often caused by our thoughts focusing too much on the future. Depression, another common complaint, is often thoughts remaining focused on the past. Peace comes from living in the present – although we all know how that is often easier said than done! If you are struggling with anxiety or noticing its presence, be reassured that you are not alone.
What is Meditation?
So we’ve covered anxiety but what about meditation? Meditation involves:
- Sitting comfortably.
- Focusing on your breath.
- Gently redirecting your thoughts when your mind wanders (which it inevitably will).
Although it’s worth noting that these aren’t hard and fast rules, meditation can take many forms. Imagine meditation as your door to slowing everything down. The rapid thoughts in your brain, your breath and your overall pace of life. It’s about taking time to pause; just a few minutes of doing this can be incredibly beneficial.
Meditation Benefits
Over the past few years, meditation has gained some real traction and popularity. Well, it turns out meditation has a buffet of benefits, so there is no surprise there. It’s like a one-stop-shop for self-care, from reducing stress and enhancing emotional well-being to boosting concentration and improving sleep quality. Plus, as we tread the path of mindfulness, we become more aware of our thoughts and feelings, empowering us to respond thoughtfully instead of reactively.
Meditation often helps put things into perspective and gives you a new way to frame things. Is it a one size fits all solution? No, but it certainly can offer respite and relief to even the most stressful of situations.
How Does Meditation Help With Anxiety?
So, how does meditation help with anxiety? When we meditate, we create a moment of inner peace and calm. A place where the noisy worries take a backseat, and you’re in control. Meditation has been scientifically proven to reduce the production of stress hormones while increasing those delightful ‘feel-good’ chemicals in your brain. It’s like giving your mind a spa day – relaxing and rejuvenating.
Although it is unlikely that a meditation session will fix all of your most pressing problems in one go – it can stop you from spiralling and put you back in the driving seat of your life. Regular meditation sessions work best over time. When you begin this journey, it can feel counterproductive but stick with it. You have to imagine you are training your mind to release and let go, which is quite a scary thought for your subconscious.
Depending on your anxiety levels, it will depend on how long the initial process of getting into meditation will take. It’s worth persevering and incorporating it into a regular practice to start seeing the significant impact.
Final Thoughts
As we wrap up our calming journey through meditation and anxiety, remember that every individual’s experience is unique. While meditation can be incredibly beneficial, it might not be a magic wand for everyone. It’s a practice that takes time, patience, and consistency. But if you’re intrigued by inviting a little more tranquillity into your life, why not try meditation? Whether you’re in your early twenties or gracefully stepping into your sixties, the power of mindfulness knows no age limits.
It’s worth noting that although anxiety symptoms are common, if it significantly impacts your life, that isn’t normal. I’d always recommend speaking to a medical professional about anxiety if it impacts your daily life. Although meditation isn’t harmful, it might be that you need help and support in other areas, too, so always best to explore those options with a GP.
So, there you have it – a glimpse into the world of meditation and its potential to be your anxiety-fighting superhero. Until next time, take a deep breath, exhale, and remember that you’ve got the power to create moments of peace amidst life’s beautiful chaos.
